Which Class Format Is Right for Me?

At Pet Behavior Help, we offer training in both group and one-on-one settings. Working in a group of other dogs and people is one of the best ways to teach your dog to connect with you despite distractions and can be a lot of fun. Most puppies and dogs benefit from group classes, but the information on this page can help you determine the best fit for you and your dog.

My dog gets excited around other dogs. How do I know if we’re ready for a group class?

Exercise your dog, then take some fabulous treats (such as hot dogs, cheese, steak or chicken) on a walk with you. When you see a dog or a person, put the treat in front of your dog’s nose and try to turn their head toward you. If they give you attention and eat the treat, then a group class will most likely work for you.

If your dog struggles to give you attention, that’s okay. Please reach out to Val to discuss class options.

My dog seems hesitant around new places, people or dogs. Is a group class right for us?

Some dogs need more time to acclimate to new places or people. Take your dog to a new place like a park or trail and bring some fabulous treats (such as hot dogs, cheese, steak or chicken). Find a quiet place a short distance away from the action and just sit with your dog. After a few minutes, put the treat in front of your dog’s nose and try to turn their head toward you. If they give you attention and eat the treat, then a group class will most likely work for you.

If your dog is too afraid to eat or tries to hide, then behavioral counseling may be the best place to start training. Please reach out to Val to discuss private lessons.

My dog lunges, pulls towards, barks at and/or loses emotional control around other dogs and people. Can you help us?

What if I prefer private lessons or need a more flexible schedule?

Our private lessons are a great option. You can work one-on-one with an instructor to cover all the basic commands or can focus on the obedience problems you want to solve on your own schedule.
